PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) -- The effort to ask South Dakota voters to approve pay raises for legislators is half way to Governor Daugaard's desk.

The House passed the resolution on Thursday calling on voters to approve a constitutional amendment, linking lawmaker pay to the median household income. The effort now moves to the State Senate.

House Speaker Mark Mickelson of Sioux Falls puts it this way referring to the voters: You are the boss, and your employees are asking you if they deserve a raise.

If passed by the legislature, voters would decide on the November ballot if legislative salaries would be set at 20 percent of median income. Lawmakers make about $6000 a year.  The proposed raise would bump them way up by $4000, to $10,000 per year.
