PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Governor Daugaard supports efforts to increase the pay of state legislators.
At his news conference after Tuesday's State of the State Address, Daugaard said the time has come.
"Among the states, we are one of the lowest in the nation and at some point you have to address that and you just can't keep kicking that can down the road."
The proposal would tie lawmaker pay to the average median household income, so it would be an outside standard. Projections are that that would mean a raise of up to 70 percent for South Dakota's 105 state lawmakers.
State legislators are paid $6,000 per session plus a per diem allowance.
