LISTEN: New COPS money for more cops in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Sioux Falls is getting a $375,000 COPS grant to hire three new police officers.

There was already money in the new budget for four new cops, so this will mean a total of seven new officers in all.

Police Chief Matt Burns says the extra officers will allow the department to better respond to the increase in police calls over the last few years. They won't be twiddling their thumbs.

"They will all be gainfully employed once we get them hired and on the force." promises Chief Burns.

The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant program has provided money for 15 Sioux Falls cops over the past six years.

With these seven new officers, it means 46 police positions have been added in Sioux Falls since 2010.
