PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) -- State lawmakers may ask South Dakota voters to give them pay raises. The long process starts on Monday.
That's when the State Legislature's Executive Board meets in Pierre. One of the topics will be legislative compensation. House Speaker Mark Mikelson of Sioux Falls chairs the Executive Board.
Compensation has been $6,000 a year since 1998.
The Argus Leader in Sioux Falls reports that one idea would be to tie compensation to median household income, which could result in a 70% pay hike.
This discussion is in the very, very early stages. Whatever the Legislature comes up with, if anything, would have to be approved by the voters.
