WATCH: How not to be a shooting victim? Plan ahead

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- In an era of mass shootings--even at churches--now is not the time to ignore the danger.

Lt. Jeff Garden with the Sioux Falls Police Department says it's important to be ready.

"Churches, other houses of worship, businesses, it would be (good) to have comprehensive written should a crisis occurs," Garden said.

He says individuals should also look at recent events and think about how they would have responded.

With recent mass shootings in Texas and Las Vegas, protection at home and away is top of mind.

Still, with the national attention, Lt. Jeff Garden with the Sioux Falls Police Department doesn't think its time to install metal detectors everywhere, at least yet.

"I don't know if we're to that point," Garden said. "That would be subjective to the location and folks that are there and the security plan that they put together."

Garden says if you're in a mass shooting incident, run, hide, fight, in that order.
