SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- He understands three languages, finds drugs, and catches bad guys.
Now Sioux Falls Police K-9 Officer Max, a Belgian Malinois, will lead a life of leisure and protecting his handler and now owner Officer Grant VanVoorst and his family.
Max was born in Holland and understands commands in Dutch and German. He also understands English, at least a little bit. He's been VanVoorst's constant companion during long shifts in the patrol car together, sniffing out drugs, running down perpetrators, or being a public affairs officer at local schools.
It's well earned, according to VanVoorst.
"He's put in his time," VanVoorst said. "He's done a lot of good work for the police deparment. I think it's well deserved."
Like all officers, Max received a plastic card from Chief Matt Burns saying he had retired in good standing with the department. Only Max doesn't have a wallet to put it in.
"K-9s have been a very useful addition to our department, serving a number of different roles to help keep Sioux Falls safe," said Burns. "Max has been an outstanding K-9 and he will have a well deserved retirement."
VanVoorst said that Max would probably tell the young pups coming up to tell the bad guys, "Don't run." He also said you're not supposed to bond with your dog. "But you do," he said.
They'll have plenty of play time and hugs with VanVoorst and his family now that Max has retired from the force.
