Sioux Falls, SD (KELO.com) – During November, Siouxland Libraries customers get a discount on fines owed by donating food items for those who might otherwise go without.

Food for Fines encourages donation of nonperishable, non-expired canned goods and boxed cereals (no glass jars, please) at any Siouxland Libraries location. Canned meat, canned dinners, and boxed cereal are in particular demand. Donors get 50 cents off late library fees for each food item. Food for Fines does not cover accounts in debt collection. Please be sure food items have not passed their “use by” dates.

The drive benefits food pantries in Baltic, Brandon, Garretson, and Hartford as well as Feeding South Dakota in Sioux Falls.

Feeding South Dakota reports that 106,646 South Dakotans are at risk of going hungry daily. Of the families that rely on that organization:

·         72 percent buy cheaper, less healthy food to stretch their grocery budget.

·         68 percent must choose between paying for food or utilities.

·         60 percent have sold personal property to get money for groceries.

·         22 percent water down food or drinks to make it go further.

Your gifts of food will make a difference for so many in our area. For more information, please call Siouxland Libraries at 367-8700 or visit www.siouxlandlib.org.
