City: Sioux Falls needs more work on gay rights

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) Sioux Falls scores better each year on the Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index on how cities treat gays, lesbians and transgender people.

But Assistant City Attorney Colleen Moran says the city has more work to do, especially getting sexual orientation protections specifically in city ordinances.

"If we included those we would certainly score better, but it would also, in my mind, be the right thing to do."

The last time the city tried including such specific language, the effort basically went nowhere in City Council.

"There was a push for that and then it was delayed. I think with any kind of change that is made or anytime you are trying to get something changed, part of that is education and information.."

Sioux Falls scored 63 on the Equality Index this year, way up from 40 last year.
