SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- An American Flag carried across South Dakota by a flotilla of motorcycles will now go to the christening of the new U.S. Submarine, South Dakota.
Retired Commander Wiley Cress led the motorcycle honor guard. He joked that he "led from behind."
At the ceremony on Monday at J&L Harley Davidson in Sioux Falls, Cress placed the flag in the saddlebag of a special commemorative motorcycle that will be sent to the christening in Groton, Connecticut. U.S. Representative Kristi Noem, among others, attended the ceremony.
The flag made it to Sioux Falls by way of Sturgis, Pierre, Aberdeen, and Groton, South Dakota.
The USS South Dakota (SSN 790), a fast attack submarine, will be christened October 14.
