SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.Com) -- Initial indications are the Sioux Falls School District has passed an enrollment milestone in 2017.
Early number show over 24,000 students will be taking classes in K through 12 at all Sioux Falls public schools in the upcoming year, a number propped up by growth in all but one grade range.
Michael Christopherson with the school district says the K-5 grade range did show a 49 student decline from last year, to 11,745. Grades 6 though 8 saw a four percent jump to 5,505 students. The three public high schools boast an enrollment of 6,781, an increase of 1.7%.
That adds up to an enrollment of 24,031 in grades K through 12. A 1.37% jump from last year.
Christopherson said the initial enrollment numbers are calculated by classroom attendance on the first Friday of the school year. He added that the 6th grade class this year has been a bit larger than normal, which could attribute to the large jump in middle school population and the slight decline in the lower level.
