SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO-AM) -- Ok, so the actual solar eclipse was a bust in Sioux Falls.
Heavy clouds and light rain followed by really heavy rain did, well, dampen spirits--but only a bit.
At the Vance Thompson Vision eclipse party on west 57th Street in south Sioux Falls, clinic staff had their hands full directing the traffic into the facility and helping people with parking.
The clinic gave out solar glasses--which you can't see through unless looking at the sun, they're so dark--and round, moon-like ice cream bars.
Children as young as one, teenagers, their parents, and elders all made the eye clinic "Eclipse Central," with a festive mood.
Elders Oscar and Maxine Lange of Beresford, S.D., lingered in the rain as the several hundred partiers left. Oscar said he was disappointed by the poor viewing conditions but also added that he would gladly do it again for the chance to view an eclipse. They came prepared for the rain with plastic wrapped hats and a plastic sheet they put over themselves. See the video of their interview at right.
A group of young women teachers equipped with their solar glasses got literal front row seats and enjoyed the whole scene and each other's company while at the event.
