SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls City Council gets a refresher tomorrow from planning and zoning on Shape Place Zoning and flood plain management for the benefit of the newest members.

Planner Jeff Schmitt says the city hopes to get FEMA's final letter of determination next month and can begin permitting building plans along the levee.

Schmitt says maybe by January or February of next year, the FEMA maps will be updated.  He says a new ordinance, which council will consider this summer and fall, will also be in place.

Flood insurance will not be required once the new maps are issued.

Shape Place Zoning went into effect in 2014 and was an update to the city's 1983 ordinance.  He says the Shape Place is still the same principles that citizens have come to expect and appreciate.  It's what residents can do with their land, how they can shape it.
