SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) Polygamous church leader, Lyle Jeffs, is in the Minnehaha County jail, after nearly a year on the run.
Jeffs was captured in Yankton and brought to Sioux Falls Wednesday night, according to State Public Safety Spokesman Tony Mangan.
"The highway patrol was called to Yankton by local authorities. When they got there, the subject had already been arrested. As far as the highway patrol's major role, what they did was they transported the subject back to Sioux Falls at the request of the FBI."
The leader of a Fundamentalist offshoot of the Mormon church was awaiting trial for alleged food stamp fraud when he fled home confinement in Utah in June of last year. The church also has a secretive compound in southwestern South Dakota.
It's unclear what Jeffs was doing in Yankton. The sect's compound near Pringle is some 400 miles to the west of Yankton.
