PIERRE, S.D. (KELO AM) South Dakota is part of a multi-state settlement with Target Corporation over the massive data breach that hit the department store chain back in 2013.
The $18.5 million settlement may sound big, but when you break it down among the 47 states involved, South Dakota winds up with just $174,000.
State Attorney General Marty Jackley says the investigation revealed that massive amounts of data were potentially compromised, incluidng customer names, telephone numbers, email addresses and mailing addresses, payment card numbers, expiration dates and CVV1 codes, and encrypted debit PINs.
The settlement requires Target maintain appropriate computer security software and encryption policies, especially as they regard cardholer and pesonal information data.
Jackley uses the settlement announcement has a teaching moment.
"Every consumer in South Dakota should get in the habit of accessing their free credit report to be alerted on matters affecting their credit,” advises Jackley.
