SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) The case of a young Baltic man charged this week with rape and child porn is an extreme example of why parents have to be aware of what their kids are doing online and on their phones.
"We get case after case of pictures being sent in schools. It's almost becoming problematic for us," warns Captain Jason Gearman with the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Department.
According to an affidavit in the case, 18-year-old Nicholas Schmidt "intimidated" a 16-year-old girl into sending him numerous nude photos of herself and eventually into having sex with him. Schmidt claims it was all consensual.
Captain Gearman says that if you are paying for your kid's mobile device, then you have a perfect right to keep track of what he or she is doing with it.
