SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Senator John Thune says the controversy surrounding President Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey is slowing work on a wide range of issues.

Thune says Trump is currently leading through distraction.  He say he wishes the President would stay off Twitter.  He says there are things that need to get done for the country, "we have an agenda that we're trying to work through."

Thune says the President has a great opportunity to do some really good things for the people of the country, but you have to stay focused.

Thune says he hopes government can pull it all together and get this healthcare thing done and reforming the tax code, dealing with trade and infrastructure.  "Those are all things that I think matter in people's lives."

Thune doesn't believe the President obstructed justice by firing Comey.  He says it was Trump's prerogative to fire him and the investigation will go one.  Thune says he has "full confidence in the FBI and the professionals over there do a great job."  He says eventually they'll get to the bottom of this as will the intelligence community.

Thune believes that in Washington eventually the truth comes out and there are no permanent secrets down there.

Thune spoke to students at Yankton High School last week.
