SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - A physician's and healthcare professional's website has ranked Sioux Falls as the 3rd best city nationwide for doctors to practice.

Medscape's rankings are based on measures used to assess variables known to cause burnout among MDs.

Those would include malpractice filings, medical board actions, income levels, patient volumes and physician density.

Other measures considered include those that impact all residents of a city not just doctors.  For instance psychological well-being, violent crime, divorce rates and help for families with children.  Also in the mix are happiness, crime and traffic for a well-rounded assessment for professional satisfaction.

Minneapolis was Medscape's top place for doctors to practice.  Followed by Madison, Wisconsin, Sioux Falls, Des Moine and Burlington, Vermont, rounding out the top five.  Fargo checks in at number 8.

The worst five cities for doctors to practice in is led by New Orleans.  The Crescent City has the least healthiest population.

Medscape's top burnout specialty is emergency medicine.  Surprising burnout specialties include family medicine and plastic surgery, while oncology did not make the list.

The highest physician income is in Fargo, the most dangerous city to practice is Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the best city for families is Omaha, Nebraska.
