SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) The NCAA has awarded Sioux Falls a Division 1 Men's Hockey Regional Tournament, the city's first ever college hockey event.
The Hockey Regional will be in March in 2018 at the Sanford Premier Center. Sioux Falls will also host NCAA Division II wrestling and volleyball championships in 2020.
Unfortunately, Sioux Falls lost out on NCAA Division I Men's basketball First and Second rounds, which it really coveted.
"Yeah, we are always hoping for more, of course. Three is still a great success for the city of Sioux Falls. We will see where we are positioned for the future years," said Sioux Falls Sports Authority Executive Director Bryan Miller at a Tuesday news conference.
Terri Schmidt with the Sioux Falls Visitors and Convention Bureau said that these three big wins for the city mean more than just sports.
"This will again elevate Sioux Falls even more and more out in the business community, the visitor community and the quality-of-life community, so I'd say Let's Celebrate!"
The NCAA announced Tuesday that the Sanford Premier Center, in conjunction with the University of North Dakota, will host the hockey regional March 23-25.
The Sports Authority placed bids for 20 events and is still waiting to hear about Division I Women's basketball regionals.
