SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Avera Health begins construction this fall on a new campus at 69th Street and Louise Avenue as part of $174 million worth of projects, the largest in Sioux Falls' history.

President and CEO Dr. David Kapaska says the campus will specialize in orthopedics and sports medicine, gastroenterology, rheumatology and internal medicine.

Kapaska says the new surgical hospital will be designed with patients' diverse needs in mind.  "This runs the gamut from those who need complex orthopedic surgeries, to Baby Boomers seeking quality of life, to seasoned athletes looking for an added advantage, to weekend warriors wanting relief from nagging injuries."

The Avera on Louise Health Campus will be a walk-able, consumer friendly campus on 82 acres in southwest Sioux Falls.  The campus is slated for opening in 2020.

Kapaska says the payroll for 600 construction workers will be around $28 million over a two-year period.  Avera estimates it will create a ripple effect that will contribute to 1,200 total jobs ans $118 million in earnings.

Work begins this fall, and when finished, the campus will have multiple buildings.  The first phase includes a surgical hospital and medical office wing.

Kapaka says the new campus will allow for extensive renovation at its main campus, with additional details to be released soon.  He did say that "this project will allow for the expansion of surgical suites at Avera McKennan to accommodate all the latest technology."
