SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) Sioux Falls City Council has voted to move forward with the final design for a $4 million archives facility to store the area's precious historic artifacts.
Siouxland Museums Director Bill Hoskins says current storage just doesn't do the job.
"Several of those spaces have no environmental controls. No air conditioning. No heat. And are not good storage for the museum collection."
This is a joint venture, split equally, between the City and Minnehaha County. The county has its share of the money set aside. The City is still thinking.
Councilor Michelle Erpenbach says the city must start moving on this because she's visited where some of the museum artifacts are currently stored and it's not a good situation..
"Its secure with pretty limited padlocks. It's one of those places that you drive up to and go: Oh Gosh! There's some pretty valuable amazing stuff here,"
The 29,000 square foot storage facility is to be built near the Sanford Sports Complex.
