UPDATED: Services set for Sioux Falls coaching legend

Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) - Lincoln High School coaching legend, Rich Greeno, has died at the age of 88.

Greeno's storied coaching career spanned six decades. He also worked at the University of Sioux Falls. He's been inducted into the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame, the National High School Sports Hall of Fame, and most recently the USF Hall of Fame in 2016. 

He coached the Lincoln High Patriots to 11 state boys cross country titles, and eight track titles. Then he retired, but he couldn't stay on the bench. He came back for a successful second coaching career at USF.

Born near Britton, S.D., on July 26, 1928, Greeno, who won a 440-yard dash state title as a high school senior, graduated Langford H.S. in 1946 and from Northern State in 1950 and began coaching that same year Philip. There, he met and married his wife, Rosemary, who was working in a local government office. They relocated to Yankton where he was athletic director along with coach of track and field and cross country from 1954-68.

Services for Greeno will be held at First United Methodist Church, located at 401 South Spring Avenue in Sioux Falls, on Friday at 1:30PM. A visitation will be held on Thursday at 5PM, also at First United Methodist. Greeno will be laid to rest during a private burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.
