SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO-AM) - The family that owns the building where legendary food has been served since the 40's, has decided to put it up for sale. The Lyons family says now is the time to list the dimunitive building on West 12th Street, home to Bob's Cafe and Carry Out. It's listed with a commercial real estate company that will "bundle" it with a nearby car lot.
The man operating the restaurant, Ben Weiland, says he'll keep the doors open, pending the building's sale, then he'll consider options. In the mean time, he says he hopes people will continue to enjoy his iconic food. Broasted chicken, BBQ and big breakfasts remain the specialties at Bob's. It started in 1944, with the name "Pickle Palace"....a burger joint. A few years later, it was sold and renamed "Ray's Drive Inn." It became Bob's Cafe in 1951.
Numerous "foodie" websites have made the familiar neon on 12th a destination for travels from far and wide.
The Lyons family ran Bob's for 50 years, until 2000, when the building was leased to Weiland.
