WASHINGTON, DC (KELO-AM) South Dakota's John Thune joked a little with Sonny Perdue at Thursday's confirmation hearings for U.S. Agriculture Secretary.

Both are keen hunters.

"I know we won't have any problems getting you to come to South Dakota as long as we still have pheasants in South Dakota, so I expect you to be there," said Thune to Perdue's agreeable chuckle.

On the serious side.

"These are tough times in agriculture,” said Thune. “We’ve got commodity prices and livestock prices below the cost of production, uncertainty about trade, concerns about disease, and two crop years left in terms of implementation of this farm bill before we start writing a new one. I look forward to working with you on the next farm bill as well as continuing to implement this one.”

Perdue, the former Georgia Governor, promised to work with Thune on the current and future farm bills, among other pressing ag issues.

Perdue is expected to sail through the hearings to become President Trump's Ag Chief. Even some Democrats have indicated they will vote for him.
