SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) -- The federal government needs to live up to its obligations to Native Americans in providing health care, according to state Sen. Deb Soholt (R-Sioux Falls).

She said that when indigent Native Americans can't utilize the federal government's Indian Health Service, the state of South Dakota gets stuck with half the bill under Medicaid.

The feds have historic treaty obligations with the country's Native American nations.

Soholt would like to see this and other matters impacting South Dakotans addressed in the current health care reform bill.

Sen. Soholt make her comments to KELO Radio's Todd Epp following her appearance on The Greg Belfrage Show Friday.
