PIERRE, SD (KELO AM) Something new and different to put on your license plates thanks to a law signed by Governor Daugaard on a busy bill signing day Wednesday.
It's the 50-foot-tall 'Dignity' sculpture near Chamberlain that you can see as you whizz by on Interstate 90. 'Dignity' depicts a Lakota woman covered in a star quilt. The arresting metal statue seems to welcome you to the Missouri River, and to South Dakota, with arms outstretched. 'Dignity' is lit up at night.
Daugaard signed about 30 bills into law, as the 2017 State Legislature moves into the home stretch.
From now on, whenever groups try to get a initiated measure on the South Dakota ballot and it could cost the taxpayers, a fiscal note explaining the possible cost would need to be attached. The Governor also signed that bill into law Wednesday.
Supporters of the legislation argued that voters need to know what they're getting into. Initiated Measure 22 was used as an example, because of the partial taxpayer funding of elections that was part of the measure.
