Cannabidiol legislation goes to Senate

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Testimony on the medicinal uses of cannabidiol oil was emotional and lengthy prior to the Senate Judiciary Committee sending to the floor a bill that may eventually legalize it's use.

A Northwest Iowa mother spoke of her son's epilepsy and autism and the oil's favorable results.

She says her son is having an estimated 75% less seizures now.  She says "he's happy and that makes us happy.  We've even gotten hugs from him for the first time since he was three years old."

The bill, authored by Sioux Falls Senator Blake Curd, was amended to recognize the federal government's testing and approval.

Dr. Curd says CBD is not a pyscho-active substance and he thinks there are more people that could benefit from it if the bill were unaltered.  Curd says he thinks "we have to start making significant steps in this direction."

After an hour of debate, the committee felt the bill deserved a hearing in the Senate.
