SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - A measure providing for the referral of a school board's decision to change the number of school days in a week, was deferred after it became clear that it will face more amendments.
Rob Monson with the School Administrators of South Dakota opposes the measure saying it provides a slippery slope.
Monson says unintended consequences could include referral of a school district's athletic calendar. He says school boards and administrators hear more from parents about the "all important" school lunch menu. Monson asks if the menu would be referred to a vote?
Democrat Billie Sutton of Burke is the bill's author.
Senate Education Chair Jim Bolin of Canton says there needs to be clear statement as to whether or not a vote authorized by a school board is going to be legally binding on them.
Bolin deferred action until Sutton, the Secretary of State and others have an opportunity to work through the amending process.
This was the bills first reading in a legislative committee.
