SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - A new Minnehaha County Jail can't come soon enough for correction's officials who managed an exceedingly busy time last week telling Lincoln County to remove their inmates.
County Commissioner Jean Bender says jailers also had to remove federal inmates down to the bare minimum.
Bender says last weekend was an especially busy time for the Minnehaha County Jail which led to a busy Monday when courts opened.
She says correctional officers had to take 45 inmates to 5 different courtrooms in the morning. They took 87 inmates to 7 different courtrooms in the afternoon. She some of those people were released easing the pressure on the jail population.
Bender says she knows it's difficult for Lincoln County to find a place for their inmates.
The county commission last year approved a $46 million, 320-bed jail expansion. It's anticipated that the jail will be ready in about three years.
