SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO AM) Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether is butting heads with City Council for a second day in a row.
Huether says he will not sign the Council's recently approved resolution that supports giving away the old Ice and Recreation Center property on West 51st Street to Glory House. He says giving away city property sets a very bad precedent. Huether's refusal to sign will not stop Council's intent.
Huether contends that the property is worth well over $500,000 and you shouldn't gift away such value without an open and vigorous vetting process.
Glory House is a non-profit organisation that provides services to ex-convicts. The old ice rink building could be used as a temporary shelter.
Huether's announcement comes just a day after he vetoed Council's decision to require the City Parks and Recreation Board to record meetings and post them online. Huether claims that videotaping will discourage citizens from volunteering for unelected boards and committees.
