PIERRE, SD (KELO AM) Supporters of Initiated Measure 22 have appealed to the State Supreme Court.
They want overturned the injunction against the ethics reform package ordered by a circuit court judge in Pierre.
IM 22 has been in the hot seat ever since South Dakota voters narrowly approved it in November. The so-called South Dakota Anti-corruption Act calls for an independent ethics commission, stricter limits on campaign donations, and most controversial of all, partial taxpayer funding of elections.
Circuit Judge Mark Barnett put the measure on hold after a suit was brought by a group of Republican state lawmakers, declaring, at least parts of it, unconstitutional. Governor Dennis Daugaard has asked the 2017 State Legislature to repeal and replace IM 22 with something constitutional, but that would also answer the concerns of the voters.
