SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Governor Daugaard's news that Amazon will collect South Dakota sales taxes for its online purchases is warmly received by the state's retailers.
The Executive Director of the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce, Bryan Hisel, says it helps level the economic playing field.
Hisel says local merchants in South Dakota are at a disadvantage, in some cases, regarding online purchases. He says this arrangement is a step in the right direction.
Hisel says it's unclear how much on-line retailers impact local sales. He says South Dakota government has had some guesses. He says it's known that online shopping has increased dramatically in the last three or four years.
Hisel applauds the Governor and Amazon for taking a big step forward.
