SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - A challenge to Initiated Measure 22, a revision of South Dakota's campaign finance and lobbying laws, resulted in a temporary injunction with the judge's recommendation that all parties talk about making it work.
Attorney General Marty Jackley says that discussion is happening now.
Jackley says "we'll have to see whether or not, primarily the plantiffs and the sponsors, can work out some of their language. Or if this is an issue that will need to be continued to be addressed in court."
Jackley says his role in the case is to defend the laws of South Dakota.
He says sometimes laws are put on the books by legislators and sometimes they're put on the books by the voters. He says his job is to do the best he can as the people's attorney general.
Prior to the election, the attorney general writes a summary for ballot measures and Jackley says IM 22 was a challenge.
Jackley says he recognized there were legal concerns with it. On the ballot explanation he had written, there was an indication that he felt it may go to court.
Yesterday Jackley encouraged the Sioux Falls Rotary Club to support the proposed ethic's commission provision.
